Mushroom Extracts for Skin Care: A Formulator's Guide

Reishi, shiitake, cordyceps, turkey tail, lion's mane and maitake as cosmetic-grade glycerin extracts, and how to specify them.

Functional mushrooms have crossed from the supplement aisle into skin care, and brands now ask for reishi, shiitake and cordyceps by name. Mushrooms give a formulator a recognizable ingredient story with deep traditional roots in East Asian practice, and an INCI line that reads as modern.

This guide covers six mushrooms Bio-Botanica supplies as cosmetic-grade glycerin extracts, what each is traditionally positioned for, and how to specify them, using Reishi Glycerin Extract (Part ID 3336GL) as the reference material.

Everything below is positioning guidance for cosmetic ingredient selection only. Bio-Botanica supplies the extract and its documentation; any finished-product claim, and the substantiation behind it, is determined by the brand and its own regulatory review.

1. Reishi (Ganoderma lingzhi)

The best-known functional mushroom and the one most often requested for skin care. Reishi is traditionally associated with calm and balance and is positioned in soothing serums, creams and masks. Reishi Glycerin Extract (3336GL); also Zea-Botanicals® (3336ZB).

2. Shiitake (Lentinula edodes)

A culinary mushroom with a long place in East Asian tradition, positioned for brightening- and radiance-themed products. Shiitake Glycerin Extract (3338GL).

3. Cordyceps (Ophiocordyceps sinensis)

Traditionally associated with vitality, and used in energizing and revitalizing positioning for daily-care and eye products. Cordyceps Glycerin Extract (9390).

4. Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor)

A recognizable name from the wellness aisle, specified for protective and daily-care positioning. Turkey Tail Glycerin Extract (9389).

5. Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus)

Known to consumers from the cognitive-support category, and carried into skin care for the ingredient-story value of the name. Lions Mane Glycerin Extract (9387).

6. Maitake (Grifola frondosa)

A culinary and traditional mushroom positioned for hydrating and conditioning formats. Maitake Glycerin Extract (9391).

A Blend Option

Where a formula wants several mushrooms under one INCI set, Mushroom Complex Glycerin Extract (3982GL) combines functional mushrooms in a single glycerin carrier.

Specifying Mushroom Extracts for Topical Use

  • Grade: all Part IDs above are cosmetic-grade, Topical, in a glycerin carrier. Bio-Botanica's alcohol-free mushroom extracts (for example Reishi Alcohol-Free Extract, Part ID 5541) are ingestible-grade materials for supplements and beverages, not for topical formulation.
  • Phase: glycerin extracts disperse into the aqueous phase during cold or gentle warm processing; serums, essences, toners, gel and cream moisturizers and sheet-mask fluids are the usual formats.
  • Plant part: fruiting body, stated on the Spec Sheet/TDS.
  • Pack sizes: 4 kg, 10 kg and 19 kg, with 200 kg on most Part IDs.

Full-Spectrum, Bio-Chelated and Documented

All six are supplied full-spectrum and non-standardized.

Production runs at Bio-Botanica's FDA-inspected cGMP facility in Hauppauge, New York, using the proprietary Bio-Chelated® process, which combines cold percolation with low-heat distillation to carry the botanical's naturally occurring constituents through in their native ratios. Identity, microbial, USP and heavy-metal testing run in our onsite laboratory (HPLC, UPLC-MS/MS, GC/MS, LC/MS and ICP/MS). We operate under NSF, cGMP and FSSC 22000 quality systems, with Kosher, Halal and Organic certification available on qualifying materials. Every sample ships with a Spec Sheet/TDS, a representative Certificate of Analysis and a Safety Data Sheet.

Which mushroom extracts are used in skin care?

Reishi, shiitake, cordyceps, turkey tail, lion's mane and maitake are the mushrooms most often specified in skin care. Bio-Botanica supplies each as a cosmetic-grade glycerin extract, plus a multi-mushroom complex.

What are mushroom extracts positioned for in cosmetics?

Positioning follows each mushroom's traditional story: reishi for calm and balance, shiitake for radiance, cordyceps for vitality, maitake for hydration. These are ingredient-positioning frames; any finished-product claim is determined and substantiated by the brand.

Are Bio-Botanica's mushroom glycerin extracts cosmetic grade?

Yes. Part IDs 3336GL, 3338GL, 9390, 9389, 9387, 9391 and 3982GL are tagged Topical and Cosmetic & Personal Care. The alcohol-free mushroom extracts are separate ingestible Part IDs.

How do I add a mushroom extract to a formula?

Glycerin extracts go into the aqueous phase during cold or gentle warm processing. Confirm usage level, compatibility and preservation in your own base against the Spec Sheet/TDS and a sample.

What part of the mushroom is extracted?

The fruiting body. The plant part, carrier and specification are stated on each product page and on the Spec Sheet/TDS that ships with every sample.
