About this plant part
The stem is the plant's structure and its plumbing, and a few botanicals store their most useful material there. Yucca stem is the classic example — a saponin-rich botanical that foams and emulsifies without synthetic surfactants. Nopal cactus belongs here too: what looks like a leaf is botanically a flattened stem, a cladode.
