Formulator's Guide

Botanical Extracts for Immune Support Formulas: A Formulator's Guide

The six botanicals that anchor the seasonal and immune-support category, the formats each comes in, and the Part IDs to specify.

Immune and seasonal support is one of the largest categories in dietary supplements and functional beverages, and it is built on a short list of botanicals consumers already know by name. For a formulator, the questions are which of those botanicals carry the category, which format fits the finished product, and which Part ID to specify.

This guide covers six botanicals Bio-Botanica supplies to immune-support formulators, using Elderberry Alcohol-Free Extract (Part ID 5458) as the reference material.

Everything below is structure/function framing for ingredient selection only, not a consumer claim. Traditional uses described here are not validated in multiple, well-controlled clinical studies and have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.

1. Elderberry (Sambucus nigra)

The anchor of the category and the botanical consumers search for first in season. Elderberry Alcohol-Free Extract (5458) for liquids and syrups; Elderberry 3:1 Solid Extract (2053B) for gummies, syrups and concentrates. Elder Flowers Fluid Extract (5044) and Elder Flowers Powdered Extract (4228) cover the flower.

2. Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea and E. angustifolia)

The most established immune-support botanical in Western herbal tradition, specified across liquids, capsules and lozenges. Echinacea Alcohol-Free Extract (5455), Echinacea Fluid Extract (5043), Echinacea Purpurea Tops Tincture (5461T), Echinacea Angustifolia Root Tincture (5461R) and Echinacea Flowering Tops Powdered Extract (4222T). A combined Echinacea/Goldenseal Alcohol-Free Extract (5457NB) is also available.

3. Astragalus Root (Astragalus membranaceus)

The year-round immune botanical of East Asian tradition, often paired with elderberry and echinacea in daily formulas. Astragalus Alcohol-Free Extract (5406) and Astragalus Fluid Extract (5003D).

4. Olive Leaf (Olea europaea)

A Mediterranean heritage botanical increasingly specified in immune and daily-wellness liquids. Olive Leaf Alcohol-Free Extract (5515).

5. Ginger Root (Zingiber officinale)

The warming botanical of seasonal syrups, shots and teas, and a flavor contributor in its own right. Ginger Root Alcohol-Free Extract (5472), Ginger Root Fluid Extract (5055B) and Ginger Root 4% Powdered Extract (4288).

6. Reishi (Ganoderma lingzhi)

The functional mushroom most associated with immune positioning. Reishi Alcohol-Free Extract (5541); see also chaga, shiitake, turkey tail, lion's mane and maitake alcohol-free extracts for multi-mushroom blends.

Choosing the Format

  • Alcohol-free extracts (AF): glycerin carrier, no ethanol; the usual choice for family lines, gummies, syrups and beverages. 23 kg and 200 kg.
  • Fluid extracts and tinctures (FE): ethanol-based; traditional dropper and liquid-supplement formats. 20 kg and 190 to 200 kg.
  • Powdered extracts: for capsules, tablets, stick packs and dry blends. 25 kg, 100 kg and 250 kg.
  • Solid extracts: concentrated pastes for gummies, syrups and confections.

All are intended for ingestible applications: dietary supplements and food and beverage. The full set is listed under Immune Support.

Full-Spectrum, Bio-Chelated and Documented

All Part IDs above are supplied full-spectrum and non-standardized.

Production runs at Bio-Botanica's FDA-inspected cGMP facility in Hauppauge, New York, using the proprietary Bio-Chelated® process, which combines cold percolation with low-heat distillation to carry the botanical's naturally occurring constituents through in their native ratios. Identity, microbial, USP and heavy-metal testing run in our onsite laboratory (HPLC, UPLC-MS/MS, GC/MS, LC/MS and ICP/MS). We operate under NSF, cGMP and FSSC 22000 quality systems, with Kosher, Halal and Organic certification available on qualifying materials. Every sample ships with a Spec Sheet/TDS, a representative Certificate of Analysis and a Safety Data Sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions: Immune Support Botanicals

Which botanical extracts are most used in immune support supplements?

Elderberry, echinacea, astragalus, olive leaf, ginger and reishi anchor most immune and seasonal-support formulas. Each has a traditional positioning consumers already recognize, and each is available from Bio-Botanica in liquid and dry formats.

What is the difference between an alcohol-free extract and a fluid extract?

An alcohol-free (AF) extract is carried in glycerin with no ethanol, which suits family lines, gummies, syrups and beverages. A fluid extract (FE) or tincture is ethanol-based and used in traditional dropper and liquid-supplement formats. Both are ingestible grade.

Can these extracts be used in gummies and syrups?

Yes. Alcohol-free and solid extracts are the usual inputs for gummies, syrups and concentrates; powdered extracts suit capsules, tablets and dry blends. Compatibility and usage level are confirmed by your lab against the Spec Sheet/TDS and a sample.

Are the immune support extracts standardized?

They are supplied full-spectrum and non-standardized by default, produced by the Bio-Chelated® process. Where a specification calls for a standardized grade, ask our team; several botanicals are available standardized to a marker.

What documentation ships with a sample?

A Spec Sheet/TDS, a representative Certificate of Analysis and a Safety Data Sheet. Regulatory packets and allergen statements are available on request, and samples ship free within the continental United States.
